Fil au Chinios Waxed Linen Cable thread is a waxed corded linen thread. Cabled linen is considered to be the best thread to work with by many leather makers (this is the thread that Hermes use for their leather goods).
Because the Linen Cabled thread is so strong and resistant to abrasion, it is the best choice of thread for many traditional and modern crafts such as; sewing leather, puppetry, book binding. knotting and beadwork. It is also an excellent thread for heavy fabrics such as awnings, sails and tents.
The term corded means that the thread has been twisted twice. The thread is made of three strands, each of which consists of three strands. These threads are twisted, moistened and re twisted. The moistening prevents the threads from distorting and cabling increases the resistance, giving a nicely rounded thread that is generally used for luxury leather goods.
Like all Fil au Chinois threads, Linen Cable is lightly waxed. The thread is passed through a bath of starch and bee's wax before twisting. Because the wax does not sit on the surface of the thread there is no stickiness, the threads have a nice sheen and are resistant to fraying.
This size of thread comes on plastic spools of 50 g, each with approximately 375 meters of thread.
I also have this thread in the following sizes;
No. 332- 0.77 mm diameter
No.632- 0.51 mm diameter
No. 532- 0.57 mm diameter
No. 432- 0.63 mm diameter
